"A beautiful & comfortable choice in Melbourne"
I chose The Langham for our 5 night stay, as I got a good deal online by booking a few months ahead. Booking direct with the hotel was the best option. The hotel is stunning, in an classic opulent over-the-top way. It’s very photogenic inside. Staff are warm and welcoming, and the rooms are pretty good too. The beds are wonderfully comfortable, which was a highlight given that we stayed 5 nights. In fact you can buy one of their beds if you really want to. Eating and drinking at The Langham comes at 5-star prices, as you would expect. We had excellent $28 steak sandwiches at the Aria bar one night, but it was hit and miss the next afternoon with a $12 bowl of chips taking well over 30 minutes to arrive, and when they finally did appear, half of them were cold and stiff, really inedible. My complaint met with an appropriate response from staff so I was placated, but only just. The scones & tea met with my husband’s approval though, and he’s fussy about his scones! We also had a lunch at Melba, the fine dining buffet restaurant, which was very good. I had previously eaten there for a Sunday lunch, which was nearly $100 a head, but magnificent. We did not try the buffet breakfast, judging $40 per person ($50 on weekends!) to be a bit too pricey when there are other really decent options nearby. My only other comment is about patchy service, specifically the evening turndown service. Now, we couldn’t really care less about getting a turndown (it’s a nice touch of luxury I guess) but it seemed a bit weird that it only happened 2 nights out of 5. We were out for dinner every night so we’re not sure what happened there. I have to admit I was expecting a higher standard from The Langham. Overall we gave it 4 out of 5 - beautiful and comfortable but certainly not perfect.
"My fourth stay and it never disappoints!"
This is probably my 3rd or 4th review of this property, which is my "go to" spot to stay in Melbourne (where I go a couple of times per year). I always get a river view room...this time they gave me a corner room which is even nicer. The rooms are very well appointed with nice amenities, including ground coffee and a French press. The rooms and bathrooms are large and comfortable. The hotel also has a nice, heated indoor pool which is great for swimming laps. My only complaint is that they don't offer any special rate for an early check in, as I generally come from the US and arrive at 8 or 9 AM after a 15 hour flight. If I want to be guaranteed of being able to check in, I have to pay the full night before. I've suggested that they offer some kind of discount, but so far no luck. Overall, a very nice place to stay in Melbourne...great location in Southbank.
Beautiful High Tea . Went with friends for birthday. What a lovely surprised to receive a gift from the Langham with a personalised card offering discounts. Made me feel very special. Service provided by Merel was outstanding. I have been to many High Teas and this is one of my favourites. Highly recommended
"Great location and service"
The Langham is in a great location, right next to the river and CBD and close to lots of bars and restaurants. We arrived very early after a long flight and were expecting to just drop our luggage off, but the receptionist offered us the use of the spa for a wash and brush up which was very welcome. We only had to wait until mid-morning to get into our room, which was spacious with a great view, robes, slippers and toiletries from the hotel's spa range. We really enjoyed the fantastic breakfast the following morning and would definitely stay again next time we visit Melbourne.
"Location great but otherwise so-so"
Situated on the river, just opposite the CBD and with cafes and bars beneath, it's a great location. The hotel itself has a bit of a grandiose feel. One of those naff player-less pianos plays incessantly in the lobby. The interiors are not by any stretch boutique in style. The rooms are fine. But we found the concierge services to be poor (and non-existent on Sunday evening). Overall, it's living off its location.
