"I wish I could give it 3 1/2 stars..."
The London is good, better than average, but in my opinion it isn't very good. Overall it feels very dated. The lighting is too dark for my taste -- from the lobby, to the restaurant, to the hallways & elevator. I had a room on a high floor which I recommend. I can't imagine being on a lower floor, it would be even darker. In general, the whole place could use a makeover because the location is fantastic and the rooms are huge. I was here for business, otherwise I would never choose to spend my own money here. The room decor is an odd mix of modern and worn out furniture -- the leather bench at the end of my bed had a ripped handle, the closet had some sort of weird wooden piece, and the couch and cushions had seen much better days. The room, however, was spotless, and the bathroom is really, really nice. I would warn you against eating at the restaurant unless you want mediocre food at outrageous prices. If they renovate The London I would try it again because I love the location.
"When it was good..."
On the positive side: The bed was amazing, with fabulous linens; we wanted to take it all home with us. And the suite was stylish (if perhaps trying a little too hard to be) and remarkably spacious, especially for NYC. Room service was efficient, with good food. Excellent fast, free wi-fi. On the other hand, the lobby was chaotic, with no seating; no one to greet guests; not even a clear indication of where patrons should enter the building (which often had barricades set up to control the very small crowds who seemed to be hoping for glimpses of presumably very minor celebrities). When approached, lobby staff was courteous but chilly and ill-informed. On arrival, we were assigned a room that turned out to be in a different class -- a "London Suite," on a lower floor -- than the "London Storey Suite" we had booked for 3 nights. When I brought this to their attention the next day, there was no apology -- which made me wonder how often this happened and how few guests realized it -- though they agreed to a cost adjustment of $30 per night. The final bill, however, showed the price correction only for the first night until I complained (again). Every invoice had multiple errors, totaling several hundred dollars, and required close scrutiny and repeated corrections, while inflated charges were posted to my credit card several times. With more attentive customer service and reliable billing, this could be a favorite NYC hotel. But the disappointments in those areas would probably keep me from going back to The London NYC.
We booked this hotel based on recommendations from friends and family and because it was listed under Amex Fine Hotels. Unfortunately it fell far short of our expectations. In general the front desk staff were not particularly kind or accommodating. We reserved 2 rooms, one for my husband and I and the second for our newlywed son and daughter-in-law. Food and service at restaurant was below average. Rooms are looking very tired. We will not be returning.
"Hitting the Town. "
Everything was fabulous. The room service was above all expectations. My view was spectacular, theatrical, and something to behold. Loved every moment of everything. I had a suite on the top level and it was worth every penny. Also everything was fare price. The full bar in my room was also a huge plus.
"Spring for a suite"
This hotel is in a perfect location....quick walk to the park, theater, shopping, etc. The suite was perfect for our group of 3 girls traveling. As many reviewers mentioned the shower/bath area is divine....large and luxurious! The color palette of the rooms...white, silver, light green/blue was pleasing, the remote curtains were a nice touch too. The sitting room offered a great banquette for lounging and we were so comfortable and chill hanging out and catching up that, we cancelled our lunch reservation and ordered take out from Black Tap. Our suite had two singles so the hotel provided a roll away bed (not cot) and extra linens. I would highly recommend a stay at the London and will be back!
