"A memorable three night stay in a fabulous old palace with truly lovely and helpful staff."
We struck lucky deciding to stay in Mdina rather than Valletta although we visited for one of the days. It was only a twenty minute taxi ride away. Mdina is a fabulous medieval and compact walled city which has been well preserved and kept beautifully clean. Good choice of restaurants and cafes and no night time rowdiness. Our hotel was Xara Palace which is exactly the type of hotel we like. Our room was on two floors with two balconies one of which had a Jacuzzi which gave us superb views of the island . The staff were truly lovely and very helpful. The hotel has an outstanding restaurant which we visited for one of the evenings. I don't think that I could have eaten there for more than one evening. Sometimes you can have too much of a good thing. Malta is well worth a short stay visit. Even in mid November the weather dry and warm. We did a half day tour around the island on a jump on, jump off bus and a Geeks tour around Valletta old town. Both worthwhile and in expensive but beware the golf buggies on the Geeks tour have no suspension. You feel every pot hole and speed bump.
"Most Enjoyable "
Accomodation superb very comfortable and clean .The hotel is part of a Medieval Castle and is preserved and furnished to faithfully represent this legacy. The team are most obliging and very helpful sorting any issues promptly.. Breakfast was good and our dinner in The Mondion was the best we had in Malta . Some staff from the Trattoria would benefit from improved training product knowledge . We will definately return , thanks especially to Matthew and Bea
"Faded but the only hotel in Mdina"
This has faded, but it is the only hotel in Mdina. It is great to be in Mdina when it is quiet out of hours, so I would recommend staying here. It is not, at the moment, a 5 star hotel. Since the problem is that the 1980s (') renovations have faded, rather than the original amazing palace, it cannot be described as 'shabby genteel', but a beautiful, genteel building with shabby later renovations. My room was inherently beautiful, the castle is inherently beautiful. But the water pressure is so low it creates a problem not just for the bath but for the WCs. The 'gym' is a complete embarrassment. There is 'penny pinching'. There is a free bottle of water, but only the first night, after which it is charged.
"The only place to stay in this beautiful old city"
In a magnificent old palace, this is a very special place with a unique atmosphere. Our room was comfortable but had a musty smell, not surprising in such an old building built of stone. The managment sent up a de-humidifier to help. My only complaint was that such an expensive hotel could not include breakfast in their room rate. Their charge for breakfast was too high.
"Lovely venue, great location, average food and service"
Very nice location in the old part of Mdina. We reserved a table and just as well as it was really busy. The service was slow and lacklustre from the outset. waited ages for orders to be taken, had to keep asking for drinks, mains arrived at different times. All in all not great. The food was OK, nothing special.
