This was my second stay at Wellington. The first one was back in 2012 during my very first visit to Madrid. On the second occasion it was a different place and now our hosts selected Wellington again. I was impressed even the first time and happy to say that the quality and standards are kept very well here. There are plenty of English speaking staff at the reception all the time, hotel and rooms are spotlessly clean, everything is working. Breakfast is very extensive and you may choose from the wide variety of ready things or order somethin if you wish. Café by the pool serves excellent meals and swimming pool itself is a great find in a summer heat. Location is also very prime, close to the shopping and number of fine restaurants. It is also a classy place were everyone wearing old style uniform and there are plenty of gold around, so you feel yourself as a royalty :).
"Good hotel in a good location"
Stayed in quite a few Madrid hotels and have even lived there for a time. For this latest trip we chose the Wellington. This is a very busy hotel in an excellent location if like me you like to walk wherever possible. This trip was a mixture of shopping and sight-seeing and we were able to walk to and from the palace, the shops at Sol, the Retiro is literally across the road and Sorano is a stones throw. For such a central hotel we found it very quiet once inside. The beds were very comfortable with lovely linen and the bathrooms have good Molten and Brown products. Rooms are kept spotlessly clean and all the staff are excellent at their jobs, courteous and very efficient. We loved using the terrace bar but didn't get round to using the pool which was a shame. Breakfast was ok - plenty of variety but the bacon, eggs etc weren't very hot and the eggs were always scrambled. A bit of a change here would have been good maybe some fried tomatoes and mushrooms and a change of egg. I think I did notice someone being served with poached eggs once but as there was no breakfast menu and the waiting staff were rushed off their feet I didn't ask and no one said whether you could order say fried or boiled eggs. However, this did make me change up my breakfast somewhat so enjoyed the meats and cheeses, lots of fruit and yoghurt. I don't eat bread but there looked to be a good choice and the toaster seemed to do its job well. My daughter enjoyed the pastries and cakes. Would I stay here again' There are lots of things to like - but for me the deal breaker is having the ability to make a cup of tea in the morning or coffee in the afternoon and in all the 3 rooms our party had no tea and coffee making facilities. ( Did order it through room service and this was quick and easy) liked that in one room there was an English plug socket and one room looked out onto the street so you were able to fully open the curtains to get in some natural light. The other rooms over looked a dingy courtyard so a bit gloomy. The biggest bugbear was that one evening some sort of fashion show was hosted and surprisingly the management didn't think to warn us. So it was a bit of a shock when trying to leave the hotel with swarms of people, cameras and people milling around everywhere it was a real effort to get out and not a pleasant experience either. Also later when we came in we couldn't get to the terrace bar as the place was heaving and there were bouncers on the door. So we were forced to order room service. Finally, two lifts are not enough. If you are reasonably fit then anything up to the fourth floor it's easy to walk and quicker, anything higher than 5 and you need to take the lift and it can take an age!
"Very disappointed "
We were put on standby and spent an extra night in Madrid. We chose the Hotel Wellington because of reviews and it had an outdoor pool. Our room was newly painted but tiny and the bathroom was very dated, we were v disappointed. The outdoor pool didn't have the sun hit it till after 1pm and then it was over crowded. Breakfast was €35 each and was not at all impressive. Wouldn't stay again!
"Wonderful hotel and spa"
We spent 3 days in Madrid - August 4-7 - beautiful hotel with superior service. Our room was a large suite with 2 bathrooms and stunning terrace on the "club" floor. The club room provides the most delicious food and drink in a very pretty and comfy lounge. Our spa visit was great - we had a couples massage in a serene room. On my birthday we arrived to the room with a surprise sweet treats and champagne. Great location too.
"Superb stay in a very nice neighborhood"
Excellent Location with a wealth of very very good Restaurants in walking distance. Very kind and helpful staff. Excellent breakfast Buffet. Quiet rooms towards the Pool. However isolation between Rooms should be better.
