"Hotel Preciados, second experience"
Location is the best in Madrid, walking distance to all main attractions. Hotel rooms are modern deco, clean and confortable. Employees are very nice, friendly and helpful. Restaurant breakfast buffet is splendid and food very good.
Super location and walking distance to many good places. Room was nice and very clean. You also get the free mini bar and they refill daily. Service was amazing and they are very nice and help with any questions you have. Breakfast was not good, bad service and food was cold we had to pay 32 euros for this, you have a Starbucks around the corner so just go there.
"Solid, great location, but nothing memorable."
Perhaps the best feature of this hotel is its location, very close to Puerta del Sol, Teatro Real and Plaza Mayor. The museum district is not that close, but not far either (maybe a 15-20 min walk). The hotel is located about 40 meters into a pedestrian street; cabs can drive up to the hotel's entrance, but they may not know that -- on arrival, ours certainly did not. The rooms are well appointed, but relatively small. The décor was not dated, but not ultra-modern either. The bathrooms have good showers and fair size. However, there is one feature of the bathrooms that was annoying: the door and inner wall are made of glass, with greyed out stripes across the middle, and give to the room's foyer. This means that anyone entering the room can easily see you using the facilities. It may be just us, but we like our privacy when using the bathroom. The view from the room was also dreadful: it gave to an inner courtyard. We also had a problem with the temperature control. Our first night the room resembled a mild steam room: the air conditioning was not working, as it only spewed hot air. Drenched in sweat, we called the front desk in the middle of the night to see if anything could be done about it, to no avail. We slept with the windows wide open, and the next day the staff fixed the problem. Beyond the room, the hotel's facilities are nice, but not particularly attractive. The service was nice and respectful, but nothing to rave about either.
"Wonderful 4-star hotel in the heart of the old city"
When my wife goes on vacation with me, she insists on 4-star hotels (I use 1- and 2-star hotels when I travel solo). As this was our first trip to Spain, she wanted the best. Preciados was ideal. It is pretty much in the center of Old Town Madrid. You can get to all the major old town attractions on foot in a matter of minutes (Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, Royal Palace and Cathedral, Plaza de San Miguel, Sabatini Gardens, etc.) We were using public transportation so it was just 15 minutes from the airport on Metro Line 8 to Nuevos Ministerios, change to Line 10, get off at Plaza de Espana, then an easy 10 minute walk to the hotel. The hotel is very beautiful from the outside and opens onto a pedestrian-only street, Calle de Preciados, with many shops, restaurants, cafes, etc., which in turn leads into a major shopping area before you arrive at Puerta del Sol, all pedestrian-only. The room was wonderful, with all the nice amenities you want and expect in a 4-star hotel – wonderful bathroom, huge bed, large room, very clean. The french balcony offered a nice view over the pedestrian area. The staff at reception were quite friendly and helpful, with great recommendations for nearby restaurants (Lambuzo for tapas). We skipped breakfast, which at $21 is a bit pricey, there are numerous places to grab coffee and pastries nearby (but the breakfast did indeed look quite nice). Of all the 4-star hotels on this trip (5) this was the very nicest. We loved Madrid and plan to stay here again when we return. I might even stay here if I come solo.
"ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL AND VERY SPACIOUS"
The room we booked was a Superior Room with a queen bed and balcony. Even though the sleeping area of the room was average in size, the bathroom was enormous. It had a jacuzzi style bathtub and the water pressure and temperature were perfect. It had a ceiling window which could be opened to let steam out of just let some light in. The vanity was extremely long with two sinks and all the free amenities they supplied were more than enough. I could have lived in that bathroom it was so beautiful. Our room had a balcony, but I don't think all the rooms offer this. The balcony overlooked parts of the city, but can't say the views were anything spectacular. For me it was just nice being able to go outside without having to leave the room. When we arrived at the hotel, we did arrive a little early for checking in. Even though I wasn't expecting to be able to get into our room so early, I did inquire. Unbelievably, our room was unoccupied and they let us check-in early. That was very much appreciated after the long trip from the States because this allowed for us to take a little nap before exploring Madrid. All the staff we came in contact with were friendly and helpful. They made us feel welcome and at home at all points throughout our stay. The hotel is located a few blocks from the airport metro stops. We used the metro as our means of transportation to and from the airport rather than the expensive taxis. We probably had to walk like five blocks to get to the hotel. There are other metro stops closer to the hotel, but they are different lines and none of them had a direct route to and from the airport. Restaurants, shopping, and touristy spots are all within walking distance. It's in a perfect location for whatever you plan on doing in Madrid. There was a restaurant and bar onsite. Prices were reasonable and the service good. I'm not sure if there was indoor seating, but we sat outside every time to people watch and pass the time while enjoying our meals. If I ever was to travel to Madrid again in the future, I definitely would stay at Hotel Preciados without hesitation!
